Born and raised in Carteret, N.J. , the son of immigrants from Czechoslovakia, Steve graduated from Carteret High School, then from the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics in Newark, N.J., in 1942.

His 2 older brothers were already serving in WWII. Paul received a Silver Star saving comrades during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and John served in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge.

After his service, Steve graduated from Swathmore College and married fellow Swathmore student Shirley Bryan, and they went on to raise four children , Janet, Peter, James and David, mostly in Cherry Hill N.J. Sharing a love of music with Carol, a school nurse, they performed as the duo Musical Muses, frequently entertaining groups at nursing homes, especially one in Collingswood. By his count there were 1,729 performances over many years, even into his 90’s. They also read hundreds of books to school children as part of the First Book program.
